Tennis

Historians believe that the game’s ancient origin lay in 12th century northern France, where a ball was struck with the palm of the hand. Louis X of France was a keen player of jeu de paume (“game of the palm”), which evolved into real tennis, and became notable as the first person to construct indoor tennis courts in the modern style. Currently tournaments of professional circuits are mainly managed by the associations of professional players, namely the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) for men and the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) for women, as well as by the International Tennis Federation, the International Tennis Federation (ITF), which manages major competitions such as the Davis Cup, Fed Cup, the Olympic Tennis Tournament and the so-called Grand Slam tournaments. Tennis is a sport usually played between two players (singles) or between two teams of two players each (doubles).
